#5 – Learn Emergency Response – Queen Creek & Gilbert Team Up!

The Town of Queen Creek is accepting applications for a new program to train citizens for local emergencies! The next session begins August 31, 2010. The CERT program is a 20-hour course given over an eight-week period. Training sessions include disaster preparedness, disaster fire suppression, basic disaster medical operations, light search and rescue, and team operations.

Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) is a program that helps better prepare individuals to respond to emergency situations in the community. The Valley isn’t exactly known for hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes, so officials are focusing on other threats they say pose real dangers.

Mayor John Lewis, who will participate in Gilbert’s Community Preparedness Fair on Sept. 11, said one of the biggest threats to the region could come in the form of a hazardous-material spill along the Union Pacific Railroad that cuts through both communities.

A great idea would be for a group of neighbors, school employees or your HOA to apply. If need be the organization will constitute one class for you.

Queen Creek will conduct four CERT training classes throughout the year. Class sizes are limited to 25 participants. Town residents will be given priority over non-residents.

Gilbert conducts CERT training with a 21-hour course spanning seven weeks. (see Gilbert’s web site)

All classes are held at Queen Creek Town Hall, 22350 S. Ellsworth Road
