DPS has rolled out mobile cameras throughout Arizona, and they’re now starting to put up stationary cameras too.
The first nine DPS Photo Radar cameras will be up and running by October 22nd (they’re starred below). The other locations will follow.
When finished, there will be a total of 60 stationary cameras and 40 mobile ones throughout Arizona. If you get a ticket for going 10 miles over the speed limit, you’ll pay $181. Drive slow or you’ll pay for it.
**Starred camera locations will be set up and taking pictures starting between October 17th and 22nd

This is nothing more than the state picking our pockets. We need to elect officials to make these camera’s illeagal. Half of the fine goes to the contract holder of the camera’s. If the sate owned and operated the camera’s that might be a diferent story. They prevent traffic from moving smoothly.
Do these speeding tickets put point on ur license???? And if u throw away the ticket and avoid being served do u have to pay it?
@Mike – I for one was on the freeway with several other drivers and I saw the cameras going off like crazy, it actual distracted me and it startled me and I looked over to the side of the road, plus hit my brakes. That can’t be good!
@Joey – Here is a quote for you from another site:
“Are points assessed against my driver’s license for photo enforcement convictions?
Yes. In accordance with Arizona Administrative Code R17-4-404, Driver Point System, points are assessed by the Arizona MVD for each conviction reported to them by the Court. Each red light conviction is assigned two points, and each speed conviction is assigned three points.”

Can someone get a ticket for going under the speed limit. I ask this because the other day I was driving 58 mph and the posted limit was 65 mph on the 101 and I got a picture taken but dont know if I will recieve a ticket.
From the official website for AZ Dept of Public Safety: http://www.azdps.gov/photoenforcement
Are the Violations reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles?
“If the violation is for anything other than criminal speed or speed in a school zone, it will not be reported to the Department of Motor Vehicles for the purpose of accumulating points towards Driver License suspension. Because of this, the Department of Motor Vehicles will not be forwarding that information to insurance companies.”
Does the department own the equipment used to detect the speed and capture the images?
“No, the Department has a contractor that provides the speed detection devices, the cameras and the personnel to operate them.”
What happens if I ignore the Notice of Violation?
“If a defendant does not respond to the Notice Of Violation, a complaint will be filed into the appropriate court within sixty (60) days of the date the violation occurred. The defendant would then answer to the court for the violation.”
On Thanksgiving Day, the camera on the North 101 and I-17 junction was going off like popcorn. The section is normally 65mph, but right now it’s 55mph because of construction. What are the parameters for a camera like that? How does the camera catch only the cars speeding and not the car that is being passed by the speeders?
@Ray and @Fred – the best place to find your answers would be the official site for AZ Dept of Public Safety:

I have a question I have a commerical licence I got too photo tickets,in az will they go on my CDL ,please reply ,very thankful for your info on this ste.
@s joseph – if you are unsure of the consequences it’s best that you use this site to check the status of your tickets http://photoenforcement.azdps.gov/Inquiries/ it’s my understanding that having a CDL license is a bit more strict on the tickets issused if not addressed. I would imagine that if you just ignored them it could be very costly. As for points on your license you will need to contact MVD for the accurate answer. Sorry I couldn’t help more.
I received a photo ticket but I was not the driver at that time. I lend my vehicle to a friend and he was the one driving at that time of the picture/ticket. My friend doesn’t live in USA, will I be the one paying for the ticket since the ticket is under my name?
YES, I WAS GOINT TO SURPRISE; THURSDAY 01/29/09. I HAD JUST GONE THROUGH WHITMAN,AZ. I THOUGHT, I HAD CLEARED THE TOWN. AND, I GUESS. I ASSUMED THE SPEED LIMIT HAD GONE BACK UP TO 65. I KNOW I WAS DOING 60. THE WEATHER WAS CLEAR,AND NO OTHER VEHICLE TRAFFIC WAS PRESENT. IT WAS 08:45 IN THE A.M. I SAW THE ENFORCEMENT VEHICLE BUT FELT,I WAS BACK IN THE 65 M.P.H ZONE I FEEL THAT MY SPEED WAS RESONABLE AND PRUDENT FOR THE TIME AND CIRCUMSTANCES AT THE TIME. THANK YOU. IS THIS GOING TO GO ON MY RECORD.AND ALSO BE FINED.! WHAT DO I DO NOW.?
Joey,
The arizona state law says with speed camera or red light citations you must be hand served the citation. The US mail is invalid way to deliver citation. And you don’t have to identify yourself. You do have to pay the server if one comes to your door. Pay for his labor and gas.
Most people don’t get served. Most are mailed. If you get a certified letter, it’s still an invalid way to deliver a citation. You can even sign for the certified mail. It still is invalid. Americanintegrity
Joey,
Some legislators and police are telling people on T.V. if you are mailed a photo citation to just throw it away.
Is it still considered being served if the server does not physically hand you the document and just leaves it taped to your front door?
I just got a ticket from one of the mobile photo radar vehicles for going over the speed limit in Anthem last Tuesday. I was NOT speeding! I saw the signs, the camera and I don’t go more than 5 mph ever. My ticket does not even say how fast I was going. This is wrong.
Last comment was in 2008, but as of July 2010 there is some good news… freeway speed cameras have been turned off! Unfortunately, local city red light cameras are still active. Thought I’d post an update.
