#6 – Phoenix Remembers September 11, 2001- Patriot’s Day

Phoenix has several events around the Valley to honor fallen Heroes on Patriot Day!

Our country changed tremendously on September 11, 2001 when terrorist struck in New York, Washington DC and Pennsylvania.  I don’t know anyone personally from this tragedy however it’s a day I will forever remember! I recall what I was doing that day, I remember the horrific emotions and feelings I felt and could only imagine what those that were there that day and for those who took their last breath.  My heart goes out to those who sacrificed their lives to help those who where unsuspecting their fate that day!

Each year on that day all over the country has been set aside to remember those who died on that tragic day. We call this day Patriot Day.

Chandler

Event: Patriot’s Celebration

Phoenix

Event: Freedom Walk
Date: September 11, 2010
Time: 11 a.m.
Where: Memorial Hall, 300 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix AZ

Join city dignitaries and special guests for entertainment and a one mile walk around the park lake. There will be a free concert inside the Memorial Hall. Registration begins at 10:15.

Cave Creek

Event: The Heroes Festival and Ride
Date: September 11, 2010
Time: 9 a.m. for motorcycyle ride (Cave Creek), 6 p.m. for festival (Chandler)
Where: Several locations in Cave Creek for ride check-in, maps and events; Ashley Manor,1380 South Price Road, Chandler for evening festival.

The day will begin with the Heroes Festival Motorcycle Ride from Cave Creek to Ashley Manor followed by the main event, Heroes Festival, featuring a special tribute to 9/11 heroes, live music and entertainment, brew & food for purchase. All proceeds from the ride and event registrations will benefit the 100 Club of Arizona, a local non-profit that provides immediate financial support to public safety officers and firefighters who are seriously injured or killed in the line of duty. Tickets available online or at the event for both ride and festival.

Litchfield Park

Event: 9/11 Memorial Pancake Breakfast
Date: September 11, 2010
Time: 7:30 a.m.

A pancake breakfast will be served immediately following the memorial service by Goodyear Firefighters and donations will be accepted benefiting United Goodyear Firefighters Charities. Station tour, apparatus displays, Tee-shirt sales, raffle.

Scottsdale

Event: Arizona 9/11 Remembrance & National Day of Service Event
Date: Saturday, September 11, 2010 at 3 p.m.
Where: 7380 E. 2nd Street, Scottsdale.

The city is paying tribute to those who lost their lives and to the heroes who responded to the catastrophic events of 9/11. The Scottsdale 9/11 Day of Remembrance is a a free community event. Activities include the reading of victims’ names followed by a 6 p.m. program featuring a keynote speaker, city dignitaries, a candlelight vigil and patriotic music by the Coronado High School Varsity Chorus and Advanced Vocal Ensemble. Exhibits will be on display at noon Friday, Sept. 10, in the Performing Arts’ Atrium. They include a 9/11 Memorial Wall with 2,996 full-color memorial cards with biographical information and a photograph of each of the fallen victims and a National Unity Flag, standing nearly three-stories high and signed by the U.S. Senate in 2002.

The Phoenix Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars (MOWW), the Phoenix Union High School District, and Carl Hayden Community High School Junior ROTC cadets host the annual Massing of the Colors and Service of Remembrance ceremony to pay tribute to current active duty and former Arizona veterans who have served in the U.S. armed forces, but to especially recognize those Americans who gave their lives on September 11, 2001.

Tempe

The Valley of the Sun Exchange Clubs Foundation and the City of Tempe present this seventh annual event, where nearly 3,000 American flags will fly in the park – one for every person who perished as a result of the terrorist attacks on our nation on Sept. 11, 2001. Join community leaders, public safety members, neighbors and other valley citizens for a walk of remembrance through the memorial. A brief commemoration, including presenting of the colors, invocation, and the reading of the names of the first responders who died on Sept. 11, 2001, will be held Saturday, Sept. 11 at 5:46 a.m. A candlelight vigil with music, prayer and guest speakers will occur at 7 p.m. United Blood Services will be conducting blood drives on Saturday, Sept. 11 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 12 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. inside their bloodmobile at Tempe Beach Park.
